News flash March 4, 2011–Tonight, Rob Allanson, Editor of Whisky Magazine, and Dave Broom, chairman of the judges, announced that Wiser's Legacy has won Best Canadian Whisky in the 2011 World Whiskies Awards. The presentation, which was attended by whisky's elite from around the world took place at the Icons of Whisky dinner at the Hilton Aldwych in London.

Whisky Magazine is the world’s leading whisky publication so results of its prestigious annual World Whiskies Awards are eagerly awaited by competitors and connoisseurs alike.

A team of international judges of writers, retailers, distillers and blenders from UK, US, Canada, France, Germany and Japan tasted whiskies ‘blind’ over two rounds to first discern sub-category, then category winners. These winners then advanced to a third final round. “Undoubtedly this was the highest quality final round we have seen yet in the WWA,” said Broom, in a press release announcing the winners, “All the whiskies there were superb examples of their region and style.”

When the finalists for the Canadian whisky category were announced (after all results had been compiled) it was very heartening to see just how very strong the field was. The producers sent their best and the judges confirmed what readers of this website already know: we have a lot of very respectable juice here in Canada.

Of course this makes Legacy's win even more sweet and provides validation from some very well-tuned palates of what we knew all along: Legacy Rocks. In the words of whisky writer, Dave Broom, Legacy is "fantastic, deep, complex - everything a great Canadian whisky should be."

Wiser's Legacy was recently named Connoisseur Whisky of the Year – Domestic Market, in the 2010 Canadian Whisky Awards. Legacy has now earned another accolade. First, best in Canada and now best in the World. No doubt there are many more to come.

Legacy was a new addition to the Wiser’s line-up in 2010. To produce the intense spiciness of Legacy, both malted and unmalted rye are distilled in Wiser's copper pot still in what the company calls a “Pinnacle Blend.” Then a rich, sweet spiciness is imbued in the whisky during maturation in toasted oak barrels, to produce a robust and vibrant Canadian whisky unlike any other.

Wiser’s whiskies are held in very high esteem by Canadian whisky aficionados. Whisky lovers in the know have already given Legacy an enthusiastic reception and the recognition bestowed by this award will only help to spread the word to others.

Congratulations to Wiser's on their win and thank you to Whisky Magazine and all the judges for recognizing another world class Canadian whisky.
